Casa Contreras

In the summer of 2021, a 1921 Craftsman with an expansive lot and remarkable architectural bones came to market. In the wake of the pandemic's shelter-in-place era, Contreras was searching for something more than a house, he envisioned a sanctuary. A place that could serve as both refuge and creative headquarters should the world ever slow down in that way again.
Upon first viewing the property, the potential was immediately clear. Long drawn to historic architecture over new construction, Contreras saw the home as an opportunity to demonstrate how thoughtful modernization can coexist with preservation.
Approaching the project almost as one would the restoration of a historic boutique hotel, Contreras carefully preserved and enhanced every surviving historic element while thoughtfully updating portions of the home that had already lost their original character.
The two-year renovation included exposing and restoring brick walls, uncovering and refinishing original hardwood floors, vaulting the upstairs ceilings, and completing a basement and sunroom.
To complement the historic structure, Contreras introduced a modern guest casita, studio, and gym. These new additions are tied together by a steel shade pergola and mahogany decks that overlook a large heated pool and spa, creating a quiet dialogue between past and present.
The project ultimately became a case study in stewardship: demonstrating that historic homes can be renewed and adapted rather than replaced. The result is a residence that honors its origins while embracing contemporary life.
Today, the home stands renewed, ready for its next century.
